But given it’s only 30 or so minutes up the road, IT services to SE Bayside will remain as normal

Have you got a solid data backup procedure in place???

So often I find clients with no real data backup processes –  this is a recipe for complete IT disaster!

Once your machine has failed,  or you’ve been infected with that nasty data destroying virus,  it’s just simply too late to start thinking about backup processes.
The horse has bolted,  the party is over.  Kaput!

Don’t put sorting out your backups off –  it needs to be up and working BEFORE something bad happens

Ideally your data should be in 3 places at a minimum-

• on the PC you use
• backed up locally to another storage device
• backed up to a remote location

Then,  if everything goes pear shaped,  including your house burning down,  your data will be safe,  your Pc will be able to be restored,  and life will go on as per normal.

Data backup-  it’s just soooo  important

Now that Windows XP is no longer supported by Microsoft it really REALLY,  well and truly is time to upgrade XP to Windows 7 or 8.  Thankfully Captain Hyperbole is here to help me,  GMan the PC Man,  spread this boring and dreary message !

“Why is this important??? ” Captain Hyperbole hears you ask??

Well, he’s outrageously honoured and morally obliged to answer you,  the PC using general populace, and with as much fuss and pomp as possible….

Uttered from the Captain’s very lips (if he indeed possesses such) –

“My People!   Listen UP with ALL of your ears…
Since MIGHTY Microsoft  stopped updating old faithful Windows XP with regular security patches WAY back in April , much beloved XP has COMPLETELY and UTTERLY become a ‘training and proving ground’ for DIABOLICAL hackers to discover new ways to hack, and SIMPLY INCREDIBLE Microsoft will do nothing to fix these HORRIBLE and NASTY new security vulnerabilities in BELOVED XP going forward.  Hoor-ra!”

Further words of wisdom from El Capitano….

“The risk of exploit or compromise of your dear DEAR Windows XP system will increase over time,  across time,  and beyond the boundaries of time itself!
Windows XP defensibility will deteriorate INCREDIBLY RAPIDLY over the next few months as MORALLY BANKRUPT attackers will find ways to exploit certain KEY aspects of the operating system, internet browser, mail programs, office software (LOYAL foot soldier Office 2003 is also at end of life….sob!), and! Oh my goodness me golly gosh! Even third-party programs such your TRUSTY PDF reader will be at EXTREME risk

So, to ignore the DIRE warnings and continue to use Windows XP is to do so at your own UTMOST peril.  Ha! and Tally Ho!”

“Why is this important??? ” I hear you ask

Well, I’m glad you asked!
Now that Microsoft has stopped updating Windows XP with regular security patches, XP has literally become a ‘training and proving ground’ for hackers to discover new ways to hack, and Microsoft will do nothing to fix these new security vulnerabilities going forward. Hackers ‘skills’ can now be practiced and honed on what has become a static operating system.

“But surely no one will bother targeting XP – as there would be so many more users running with Vista, Windows 7 and 8??”

Not true. The risk of exploit or compromise of your Windows XP system will increase over time. Windows XP defensibility will deteriorate quickly over the next few months as attackers will find ways to exploit certain aspects of the operating system, internet browser, mail programs, office software (Office 2003 is also at end of life), and even third-party programs such your PDF reader (Adobe says they will not update Adobe Reader on XP anymore)

Microsoft will only release patches and updates to fix flaws in supported versions of Windows, ie Vista and newer. Microsoft won’t test Windows XP to verify whether or not those same flaws exist in it, nor will it develop a patch to fix the unsupported platform.
Attackers, however, will be able to reverse engineer the updates Microsoft develops for later versions of Windows to identify the vulnerabilities patched, figure out if those same holes exist in Windows XP, and craft exploits to compromise the vulnerable systems.

So, to ignore the warnings and continue to use Windows XP is to do so at your own peril.

Unfortunately, your risk is also everybody else’s risk too, because compromised systems end up in botnets, distributing spam, or hosting and distributing malware. Continuing to use Windows XP on the public internet is akin to going out in public with an active virus and coughing on people.

Do yourself and everyone else a favor. It time to upgrade to a newer operating system NOW
